THE NUMBER NINE aspires to offer a quiet desert haven in which to awaken and encourage the flow of 
creative endeavors away from the distractions of mainstream life. THE NUMBER NINE is a vision of Richard Lon Rowland whose painting studio, Art Studio 18, is also on the premises. Along with his wife Elin, they put together 10 acres on the southern edge of Joshua Tree National Park. With better than 800,000 acres of undeveloped land behind it, the property contains two houses and a casita along with Ric’s studio.

THE NUMBER NINE is one of the houses set up in a way that can be reconfigured to serve various purposes. The other house, THE LODGE, is a private residence. The vision is far from developed but we have already hosted special guests, held events, and had resident creators. See the What’s Happening page for details.
The number 9 is a special number in many ways (see The Number 9 page) and we have borrowed it as a symbol of gratitude for the abundance life has afforded us.
